-The Wire, by Andy Hamilton-
Vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, with Christoph Erb on tenor sax and bass clarinet, and Jason Roebke on bass, went into a Chicago studio last year and produced this single 43 minute improvisation. It’s freer playing from the vibes player than i’ve heard before, but still intensely melodic. The combination of sounds is an inspired one – sharply clangorous vibes against keening, stuttering sax and irascible, bounding bass. When Erb turns to bass clarinet, the result inevitably recalls the tonalities of Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch. It’s a brilliant exploration of the possibilities of an improvised aesthetic, unfolding in real time with rapid changes of mood and feel, and a restless exploration of timbre. John Abbeys superb recording captures the rich, deep resonance of Adasiewicz’s vibes, with sustain full on, and the microtonal variations and flutter-tonguing of Erb’s horn playing, while Roebke’s pizzicato and arco bass is well placed in the mix, and not too dominant.
